Underseen Movie: 'Things I Don't Understand'
“You’ve got to get yourself together, You’ve got stuck in a moment And now you can’t get out of it. Don’t say that later will be better…” -U2 “Nothing fades as fast as the future, Nothing clings like the past.” -Peter Gabriel  “More Than This” What really happens to us when we die? It almost seems like a foolish question to ask because we will only get to find out when we depart this…

Album Review: Old Crow Medicine Show - Live at the Ryman
A compilation of performances spanning 2013-’19 with varying lineups and a few special guests, Old Crow Medicine Show’s Live at the Ryman serves as a solid document of the string band’s most-recent half-decade-plus.
With 10 songs running 43 minutes, it doesn’t equal a full show. But with War’s Lee Oskar joining on harp for “C.C. Rider,” Margo Price doing her best Loretta Lynn on “Louisiana Woman, Mississippi Man,” the ubiquitous “Wagon Wheel” and the traditional “Will the Circle be Unbroken,” with Molly Tuttle and Charlie Worsham, who’s since joined the group, it’s a representative slice of a really good one.
Multi-instrumentals all, the Medicine men are capable of playing rhythm-section ready county-rock as on the rambunctious “Take Em Away” and traditional grass as on “Shout Mountain Music.” They’re serious on “Methamphetamine,” ribald on “Brushy Mountain Conjugal Trailer” and the strong vocal harmonies tie everything up nicely except on the atonal “Sixteen Tons,” where their lack of seriousness falls, literally, flat.
Grade card: Old Crow Medicine Show - Live at the Ryman - B+

Béla Fleck Live Stream Preview: 1/8, Mandolin
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Last year, Béla Fleck finally completed his bluegrass trilogy. Like on 1988′s Drive and 1999′s The Bluegrass Sessions: Tales from the Acoustic Planet, Vol.2, the epic My Bluegrass Heart (Renew/BMG) prominently features both legendary players and newer faces and voices. The Grammy-nominated record is entirely instrumental minus studio chatter before and after the songs finish, a diverse collection of breakneck sprints, jaunty sways, and blues ditties. Fleck often pairs the same guest collaborators together to great effect. Billy Strings and Chris Thile find themselves together on the evocatively named “Slippery Eel” and “Charm School”, the former player’s expressiveness a perfect complement to the latter’s technicality. Mandolin player Sierra Hull and guitarist Molly Tuttle play on “Wheels Up”, the foreboding, droney “Strider”, and album highlight “Hug Point”, which manages to be plaintive, warm, and spry all at once. Of course, the layered jams like “Vertigo” and “Bum’s Rush” are also large showcases, featuring mandolin player Sam Bush, fiddler Stuart Duncan, bassist Edgar Meyer, and guitarist Bryan Sutton (the latter with dobro player Jerry Douglas); criss-crossing instrumental patterns and tempo changes abound over old country stomps.
Tomorrow night at the Ryman Auditorium, Fleck and his band (Bush, Hull, fiddler Michael Cleveland, Duncan, multi-instrumentalist Justin Moses, Douglas, Meyer, bassist Mark Schatz, Strings, Sutton, and Tuttle) will perform select tracks from My Bluegrass Heart. Catch it livestreamed via Mandolin at 8 PM CST.

Can't Miss Acts From the Americanafest 2021 Lineup
After missing 2020 due to COVID-19, The Americana Music Festival and Conference, or Americanafest as it's known to fans, is back for 2021 and had dropped the initial lineup of 165 of an expected 240 acts scheduled to play the festival, held Sept. 22-25 in venues throughout Nashville. While the number of days the festival is held may have shortened they haven't skimped on the quality of acts at all. In fact, the quality of the initial lineup plus the shortened number of days likely means a lot of lineup conflicts for attendees.
But that's not necessarily a bad thing. Every year one of my top 2-3 favorite acts has been someone playing before the band I was there to see. In previous years, Americanafest fans have gotten to see Sturgill Simpson play at the tiny Basement, Yola in the back yard of a record store, and a newly sober and reinvigorated Jason Isbell along with Amanda Shires sitting in with numerous artists. So who should you see this year? Whether it's discovery, rising stars, or legends you want, Americanafest has you covered. Here are some of my recommendations.
Christone “Kingfish” Ingram To call Kingfish a “rising star” at this point seems reductive considering how far the 22 year old has come in just the last few years, but there is nothing to make me think he's done rising. If you like BB King, Robert Johnson, or Buddy Guy, you're going to want to make sure you're at Kingfish's set. This is the future of the blues.
Emma Swift You'd think a festival called “Americanafest” would be a pretty nationalist affair, but there you'd be wrong. The festival has always played host to artists from across the world, with extra large contingents from England and Australia (where, because they have good sense to ignore that mess on American radio, they just call it “country music”). An Aussie artist who has become an Americanafest mainstay is Emma Swift. After power pop icon Robyn Hitchcock championed her on social media, Swift capitalized on her bigger audience in 2020 with Blonde on the Tracks, an album of Bob Dylan covers featuring Hitchcock on guitar.
Allison Russell This is my bet for the Americanafest artist who takes the biggest leap forward in the next year. Already an Americanafest veteran with Birds of Chicago and Our Native Daughters, Russell released her solo debut Outside Child in May and it's already making appearance in mid-year “favorites” lists, including my own. Miss her Americanafest show at your own risk. By next year, she may be out of the clubs and into The Ryman.
Jason Ringenberg If you want to start a vigorous conversation with a group of strangers at Americanafest, just start talking about where Americana came from. While its influences are as wide as the genre itself, I have long maintained that the core “put the genres in a blender” essence was birthed in Nashville's '80s rock scene and nobody exemplifies that scene more than Jason Ringenberg who was the twangy rhinestoned Nashville anchor to Warner Hodges' screaming rock guitars in Jason & the Scorchers. Now a solo artist, Ringenberg has retained that country meets rock meets punk soul that made him so popular then. If you want the most entertaining Americana history lesson you'll ever get, don't miss this show.
Kiefer Sutherland Yes, THAT Kiefer Sutherland. Sutherland has released two Americana albums, 2016's Down in a Hole and 2019's Reckless & Me and yes, they're pretty damned good. At any other festival, I'd say expect a lot of “let's watch the guy from Young Guns sing” gawkers but Americanafest fans are notoriously unresponsive to (and dare one say, cranky about) gimmicks so the fact that Sutherland made his way onto the lineup is testament to the fact that he's serious about his craft.
Pine Hill Haints If there's one band on the lineup that you can point to and say “there's Americana”, it's Pine Hill Haints. Calling their style “Alabama Ghost Music” the band are musical archaeologists, unearthing “dead” songs from across country, folk, Celtic, rockabilly, and pretty much whatever other roots-ish genre happens to have a convenient graveyard and transforming them into a kind of Southern Gothic Appalachian Psychobilly Punk... thing. And damn am I totally there. You should be too.
Jill Andrews Fun fact (well, fun for me anyway): Jill Andrews was the first artist I ever interviewed in person after embarking on this “long strange trip” into music journalism. It was at Bonnaroo 2010 and I was already a fan from her work with The Everybodyfields. She didn't disappoint, as an interview or an entertainer later that day. I've seen her a number of times since and she just keeps getting better. Andrews is one of those artists who the majority of even roots music fans probably don't know, but those who do, REALLY do. Consider this me letting you into the secret society. Jill Andrews will blow your socks off if you let her. Let her.
Rainbow Girls My “discovery” band in 2019 was California's Rainbow Girls. Considering they opened a bill featuring the two acts I was most anticipating that week, Yola and Molly Tuttle, making an impression at all is testament to how good they were, enough so that I mentioned them in my recap article as one of the Best Representatives of Americana's Next Generation. They're skilled instrumentalists, but goofy and awkward in an endearing way. They weave together harmonies that are airtight, but make dad jokes between songs. They are exactly the right mix of musicianship and fun that you want in a live act.
That doesn't even scratch the surface, but that's Americanafest. In 11 years of coverage, I've seen forgettable bands, but I've never seen a bad one. Check out the poster above for the full lineup and the slideshow below for some pictures from previous Americanafests. If you'd like to attend, head to Nashville Sept. 22-25 but first go here and get your tickets before they sell out!

NASHVILLE, Tenn. | The Latest: Prine wins artist of the year Americana award
New Post has been published on https://www.stl.news/nashville-tenn-the-latest-prine-wins-artist-of-the-year-americana-award/169712/
NASHVILLE, Tenn. | The Latest: Prine wins artist of the year Americana award
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Latest on Americana Music Association’s Honors and Awards, which is being presented at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium (all times local): 9:50 p.m.
Folk singer-songwriter John Prine won artist of the year for the second time in a row at the Americana Music Honors and Awards on Wednesday, while Jason Isbell took home three awards, including album of the year.
Considered a leader of the Americana genre, the 71-year-old released “Tree of Forgiveness” this year, his first collection of new material in 13 years. Isbell won for song of the year for “If We Were Vampires,” and as a duo/group for his band, the 400 Unit.
Country singer Tyler Childers was named emerging artist of the year, while bluegrass banjo player Molly Tuttle won instrumentalist of the year.
Irma Thomas, Buddy Guy and k.d. lang all received lifetime achievement honors. ___ 10 a.m. Jason Isbell may be the leading nominee for this year’s Americana Music Association’s Honors and Awards show Wednesday night, but he faces a strong challenge from multiple female nominees aiming to add more diversity to the genre.
Isbell is the sole male nominee going up against Brandi Carlile, Mary Gauthier and Margo Price for album of the year. He’s also facing Carlile, Price and Lee Ann Womack in the song of the year category.
Carlile and Price are also nominated with Isbell and folk icon John Prine for artist of the year.
Although Isbell’s already earned two Grammys this year for his album “The Nashville Sound,” the strength of the female artists may be overwhelming this year.

Béla Fleck Live Stream Review: 1/8, Mandolin
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
If anything, you knew Béla Fleck could adapt. Cancelled flights, COVID-19, a broken down car, and even the weather threatened not just the specific lineup of his celebration of My Bluegrass Heart, his latest album, but that the event would take place at all. (Indeed, a snowstorm delayed the show at Ryman Auditorium by one night.) At the end of the day, Fleck and his team of bluegrass heavyweights put on a three-hour show at the Ryman and streaming on Mandolin. Though not everybody from his Grammy-nominated My Bluegrass Heart appeared on stage, the band’s talent level and ingenuity helped adapt many of its songs to the performance.
As players came out one by one on set opener “Blue Mountain Hop” (the only song performed from either of Fleck’s previous two albums in his bluegrass trilogy), you watched a blueprint for how this formidable group of instrumentalists build and break down songs. Mandolin, guitar, fiddle, dobro, bass, and banjo called and responded and traded off with simultaneous firmness and tenderness; as cliché as it sounds, the band’s chemistry was palpable. Throughout, big names substituted for each other like at an all-star game, like Sierra Hull for New Grass Revival cofounder Sam Bush, giving a lesson in dexterity for Chris Thile on “Slippery Eel”, or Michael Cleveland for Stuart Duncan.
Fleck, who after some corny jokes quipped that “with this level of emcee work, you’ll soon understand why I’m an instrumentalist,” nonetheless provided context for many songs, not entirely apparent from just listening to the album. For instance, “Father of Bluegrass” Bill Monroe, who infamously didn’t like New Grass Revival, eventually became friendly with the band and gave them “The Old North Woods”, at least the title, as Fleck admitted to forgetting the makeup of the original tune Monroe taught them. Still, even if the version played Saturday night and from My Bluegrass Heart was different from whatever Monroe played, you could tell Fleck constantly keeps in mind the tension between old and new stalwarts of the genre. He introduced “Charm School” by differentiating between “traditional bluegrass and the other kind,” adding that, “This is the other kind and the perfect band to play the other kind.” Fleck, Jerry Douglas, Bush, beloved new kid on the block Billy Strings, Cleveland, and bassist Mark Schatz led an enormous jam. And thinking I heard some Afropop flourishes on rhythmic duet “Psalm 136″, another where Hull stepped in for Thile, Fleck shared that his bluegrass version actually did reference that of the Abayudaya Ugandan Jews, who have adopted it as part of their “musical cultural memory.” It’s nice to see Fleck calling back to bluegrass’s Black roots.
On a base level, it was also great to see individual players or groups of a couple shine during non-solo moments. Douglas’ twangy dobro contrasted Cleveland’s deep, emotive fiddling on “Round Rock” and “Our Little Secret”, while Strings’ cascading picking highlighted “Tentacle Dragon (Revenge of the)”. Multi-instrumentalist Justin Moses, who went all over the stage, showcased dobro playing much more sharp than Douglas’ expansiveness on tracks like “Wheels Up”. And though My Bluegrass Heart is entirely instrumental, considering the gorgeous voices on stage, I was glad to see Fleck and company end the show with four songs with vocals. Bush and Hull duetted on New Grass Revival’s “When The Storm Is Over”, Hull and guitarist Molly Tuttle on Bill Monroe’s “Dark as the Night, Blue as the Day”, Hull and Moses on “I’m on My Way Back to the Old Home”. And Strings’ powerful wail led “Tennessee (I Hear You Calling Me)”. As a celebration of an album and a genre’s past, present, and future, Fleck’s show at the Ryman was all-encompassing and thrilling.

317 David Spaltro, indie filmmaker, "... Around"
Today's Guest: David Spaltro, indie filmmaker, ... Around
Filmmaker David Spaltro
I get pitched on an awful lot of potential interviews. This one caught my attention:
Order from Amazon.com by clicking the DVD cover above!
"My name is David Spaltro and I'm an independent filmmaker and producer from NYC. Last year I completed my first feature film ... Around. It was a labor of love about a young man with a dual life 'living' out of Penn and Grand Central Station while going to film school, based on my own personal experiences a few years ago in this city. 21 shooting days, 190 locations all over the city, self-financed and done for $175,000 on 40 credit cards... no, seriously. I may have caused the fiscal crisis. Sorry. "I'm writing you because I'd love to send you a screener DVD. I think, as someone who is an avid lover of film, the story will really hit home... I think because of the struggle to make the film, the whole DIY approach with no previous experiences or resources, to fund, make, and distribute a feature film in 2 years and now to see it out there and in these rough economic times what the story stands for would make for an interesting and inspirational piece, especially concerning the two lead actors, current LA transplant Robert Evans and NYC actress Molly Ryman, two amazing talents who are on their way to breaking through..." Then I watched the movie. It’s a little rough around the edges, but undeniably endearing and as personal a film as one can imagine. Which brings us to this moment.
